Yesterday, Wednesday 16th February, three males using an orange open sided van towing a chipping machine, called on an elderly vulnerable man in St Margaret’s Close, Berkhamsted.They quoted £60 for trimming trees and then charged him £460 after completing the work. It is believed that this same team was active in Kings Langley on Tuesday this week where they did some very poor work for a resident.If you see this vehicle please obtain it’s index (registration) number and phone the Police using the 999 system. Quote URN 750 of 16/2/11. Do not approach them.
Police advice is to ‘never’ deal with cold callers.

Around noon on Tuesday 15th February two males using a small van stole a motorcycle from outside it’s owners house in Oak Street, Hemel Hempstead. This is the latest in a series of motor cycle thefts across Hemel Hempstead.
The thieves cut the lock off the bike and lifted it into a navy blue Ford ‘Courier’/Fiesta van. The rear windows were blacked out and it had Ford KA hub caps. Unfortunately no registration number was taken.
One male offender was of mixed race, approximately 5’10″ to 6′ tall, medium build, clean shaven, wearing a woolly hat, a dark top, blue denim jeans with white trainers.
The other offender, who was driving, was a white male of skinny build, possibly quite tall, wearing dark clothing and a woolly hat. He was aged 25-30 years.
The bike stolen in this crime was a distinctive black and yellow Husqvana, registration number HX 51 PXF.
This van and the thieves are identifiable and are likely to return to this area. Please pay attention for them. If seen do not approach but phone the Police using the 999 system, please try and obtain the registration number of the van. If possible quote crime number D1/11/1120 when calling.
Cold Calling Tree Surgeons . . .
Yesterday (Feb 15th 2011) in Coniston Road and Osbourne Avenue, Kings Langley, some men driving a van with a white cab and an orange tipper, towing orange-coloured chipper machinery were knocking on doors to find tree work.They are described as having a strong accent, and were asking high prices. They may have been responsible for some poor tree work in a garden described as ‘dangerous’ by one resident.
The name on the cab was Roots and Shoots with the telephone number 0800 007 6293 on the orange tipper part. The vehicle’s rear lights were damaged and no registration plate could be seen.
Please avoid using cold-callers. Instead please consider using companies recommended by friends and/or obtain written quotations prior to having any work done.
Theft of Motorbike – The Grove Hotel, CHANDLERS CROSS
At 3.50pm on Sunday 30th January offender(s) pulled up in a blue Ford Transit alongside a parked and secure orange Yamaha XT 125cc motorbike (reg EO57XVA). They proceeded to place the motorbike inside. The number plate of the blue Ford Transit was P37UGS so please keep an eye out for this vehicle. It is worth noting however that this number plate was stolen from a black Toyota Corolla in Watford the night before. PS 1261 Hemmings is the investigating officer.
Theft of motor cycle – Ebberns Road, Hemel Hempstead.
Between 6.30am and 4.40pm yesterday, Wednesday 2nd February, offenders stole a distinctive yellow Suzuki 750 GSXR motor cycle, index number WR 06 DVU, from the driveway of the owner’s house in Ebberns Road near the junction with Durrants Hill Road, Hemel Hempstead. The motor cycle had been secured with a chain through it’s rear wheel and had an alarm.
We take rogue traders, distraction burglaries and any crime involving the elderly or vulnerable very seriously so even if you dont live in the area affected please read the following bulletin as the offenders may well turn up in your locality.
An elderly male had a builder come to the door and offer his services to fix his roof. Even though the owner refused the builder got his ladder out and removed a roof panel.
The owner asked him to replace it at which point he was asked to pay £30. He was made to feel under pressure and gave £20. At which point they left.
They were driving a white Tipper truck and there were three men involved. The first male was descibed as approx 40 years of age, wearing a black overcoat. He had a brother who was wearing a suit and a third man in his twenties, wearing jeans, went up the ladder. They were all described as being “Albanian looking”.
They left a leaflet behind stating they worked for a company called Direct Builders, 01753 682234, 20 Allan Way, George Green, Slough, SL3 6RA.
Cannabis Factory found in Abbots Langley
On Saturday 29th January 2011 a Cannabis factory was discovered in a residential house in Abbots Langley following information being submitted by members of Neighbourhood Watch. This lead to over 100 cannabis plants being seized and 2 people arrested for cultivation.

Signs to look out for:
- Unusual comings and goings from address
- Blinds and curtains permanently shut
- Hot internal walls a joining property
- Usually in rented properties in Cul-de-sac
- Suspicious wires or electrical interference
- Strong smell of Cannabis
